OUR CLASSES
Learning Strategies / LD Support
The Learning Strategies classroom provides a 20-25 minute daily strategy and 55-60 minutes of homework support each day for enrolled students. The daily strategies include topics such as brain development, goal setting, test preparation, grammar and writing structure, and many others. This is a credit course that students select as an elective. LS teachers follow the progress of their students and work with classroom teachers to encourage student success. Eight blocks of this incredibly popular class run each semester.
Life Skills Program (School to Work)
The Life Skills/School-to-Work program provides services for students who are working towards a School Leaving Certificate. The emphasis in the program is on building the necessary skills to find greater independence after school, finding meaningful employment, and actively participating in the community. Students participate in work experience opportunities at school and in the community, including the local Recreation Centre, and work to improve basic numeracy and literacy skills.
Independent Flex Program (Room 200)
The Pathfinders program is unique to Spectrum. Junior (grade 9 and 10) students who have had difficulty achieving success in regular, full-time classes are offered the opportunity to earn regular credits for grade level courses in a self-paced program. The program is run by Jonathan Berry who has extensive knowledge, experience, and education in supporting students with diverse learning and behavioural needs. In addition to achieving academic goals, students are guided to focus on positive habit building, organization skill development, goal setting and confidence building.
